Saturday Snapshot ... Work Space

Can you imagine working in this studio space? I love the airiness, the way the movement of the sculpture pushes outward toward the sunlit window. That horse might as well be charging out into the meadow outside! This is a small studio on the grounds of the Augustus Saint-Gaudens Historic Site in Cornish, NH. It's Fall in New Hampshire and this quiet estate would be a beautiful place to visit, if you're passing through. Just look!

This is the porch on the side of St. Gauden's summer home ... it looks west across a gentle hillside and off toward Mt Ascutney in Vermont. It's a peaceful place and was a great inspiration to Saint-Gaudens.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens is very famous for sculpting Lincoln's standing statue in Lincoln Park, Chicago, the statue of Diana that sat atop the original Madison Square Garden, the tribute sculpture to the Massachusett's 45th Regiment that was the first black infantry regiment of GAR Union soldiers, among other beautiful pieces. He was a genius and a mentor to a host of artists that were developing at the turn of the century. His estate in Cornish became an artists colony, of sorts. I'm glad it has been preserved. It's a little piece of artistic heaven here in New Hampshire.

When the leaves have turned and foliage is at its peak, I intend to drive up for a picnic and photo session ... it's a place that draws me back a couple times a year. Do you have special places that sooth your soul ?

  7. It looks so beautiful there! The little man and the horse look like they're reacting to the same surprising event in that first photo. My favorite though is the flute playing man, and those huge leaves around him.

  11. What an amazing studio. I can imagine someone like Robert Frost, composing his poetry there....

Apples? New Hampshire has them, but unsprayed,
With no suspicion in stern end or blossom end
Of vitriol or arsenate of lead,
And so not good for anything but cider.
Her unpruned grapes are flung like lariats
Far up the birches out of reach of man.

  12. What a beautiful response from Senor Cipriano! I've not heard of Augustus Saint-Gaudens; thanks for sharing this knowledge. As well as your snaps of his beautiful work space. Don't you just want to throw your arms around that horse? That side porch is heavenly, a perfect place for some quiet reflection.
